So who do I thank for this introduction which I will be promptly distributing to some friends who have never played BattleTech before?

Nice work! Wink

Read the title... it is right there. Smile

I will move the "Playing the Game" guides to these forums as well, out of my own place, so that the whole community has access to it. They give general tips about doing well in play.

May I suggest this post gets sticked?

I know I should know where to find this...

but where is the info for knowing how to host games?

I figured it out but it wasn't that easy, dammed new routers.

Wow, that handbook is quite handy, and I had no idea MM could get so deep - this post should be a sticky, if only to help us noobs.

Yeah don't worry about it... there are fewer words in "any documentation" than there are lines of Code in the GUI for MegaMek alone.

I've been asked to help after offering to help and... I'm helping.

I will say... well... 12 years worth of code... no documentation worth mentioning. This might take awhile.

This isn't user documentation but you can build the Javadocs for the source code, but it *is* documentation and is useful for developers (I use it).  You can build it via the "apidoc" ant task, and then open index.html in the apidocs directory that gets created.

OK fine... I will not sleep tomorrow until I have Eclipse + Subclipse running correctly across MM, MML, MekHQ and have at least tried apidoc.

I know I know I know... I've tried Eclipse like 3x but I've been interrupted or the totally obvious has eluded me. ZOMG whee r nede doxz!

I can't seem to find the pdf I downloaded a long time ago. I guess it might not have made the move to the new computer. But I was able to find something (not the pdf, though) related to this.

This link worked for me. I think it is the html version.

Did you try the active link that wasn't lined through in the first post?

Megamek is based of the rules of the Table Top version of BattleTech (http://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/2464...rfare&it=1).

As such we assume a understanding of those rules.  The Handbook is out of date but will provide a basic over view of getting started with MegaMek.

I also suggest looking at YouTube -

https://www.youtube.com/results?search_q...k+tutorial

https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL...0Y4zIRe90W

as there as lots of videos of the games both MegaMek and MekHQ.

As much as it pains me to say this but these forums are very quite, your best option to be able to ask questions is to use the Office CGL forums and our subforum there

http://bg.battletech.com/forums/index.php?board=29.0

Those forums are quite active and have numerous threads and active players that can help.

There are also these ones inside the SF repository for MegaMek
http://sourceforge.net/projects/megamek/...Tutorials/

I'm not sure how current they are and what not. But try them out. Wink

"Did you try the active link that wasn't lined through in the first post?" — Yes I did, and it worked.  I should have come back and mentioned that.  I'm sorry.

I apologize for not getting back here sooner, but for some reason I'm not receiving notifications when someone replies to one of my posts.  Thank you for your help.
