Can't load/save your campaign?

I am setting up this thread to help people who are having trouble loading their campaign files, or saving them. Most commonly loading problems occur between versions of MHQ, but they can occur within the same version due to a bug. I know how annoying it is when this happens. In most cases, your campaign can be recovered, but it is always a good idea to keep a back-ups.

The most common cause of campaign loading failures is that units in your game were not found in the data/mechfiles folder. This most commonly happens because you forgot to copy over your custom units into a new version, but can also happen if the names of units changes. If you look in your log file and see a line like this:

Then MekHQ can't find one of your units in the mechfiles folder. From this code, I can tell that the problematic unit is the one immediately below the Vindicator VND-1R with an id of 3078c2dc-616c-4ca5-aba9-aa9cedd8c8d1 in my save game file. Please check to make sure your problem is not a missing unit problem before posting here.

What I need to help you
If you are having problems loading your campaign file, then I will need a copy of the log file from when you attempted to load the campaign, and in most cases, a zipped copy of your campaign file as well.  You can attach these to your post in this forum. Keep in mind that if you have custom units that are not tagged as custom in your game, then I will need copies of those files as well to be able to load your campaign.

If you are having a problem saving your campaign file, then I will also need a copy of your log file which you can post here. I may also need your campaign file, but typically this is not as important.

frustrations abound  every time i do something it just wont let me save then it wont open a backup of a saved game frustrations

Well, I can very clearly see why the save won't load - half of the file appears cut off but that doesn't really address how it got that way.

What all had you done in the campaign? Was it newly created? Did you run some/any missions first? Were you customizing units? We need some more details; the present issue is that the save is incomplete so unfortunately the best we can do is try to figure out what caused it so that it doesn't occur again.

If you are able to reproduce the issue submit the mekhqlog file from when you attempted to save the file, that way we can see what the error was that resulted in the file failing to completely save.

I was and still am trying to build my regiments  this last time it just would not save so i closed out the program  then i tried to open a previous saved file that i knew was good and the program would not load it.    When i get home tonight i will attach the log and campaign zip file from todays early morning failure

i encluded the good load then after a few changes to my force i saved it said saved closed it out then try to reopen it and the second log is what happens

is there a size limit to the amout i can place in the game

Is mekhqloggood.txt from before or after you did the save?  When I look through it, I see it loading the campaign and then a launch of MegaMekLab (I take it you customized a mech), but I'm not seeing any logging of a save.  We need to see the mekhqlog.txt file immediately after you attempt a save. 

That way, if anything goes wrong during the save, we can see what it is.  Basically, it's the save process that's causing the problem, not the load process.

We don't need the files of you trying to load it - as we've mentioned the issue is with MHQ saving the file. It runs into an issue and stops half way through, so the file it makes will never load as it isn't complete.

From looking at the log when you attempted to save, it is because your force has protomechs. Currently MekHQ does not have any support for them and they cause the save to fail. For now I would just exclude protomechs entirely from your forces (even if they didn't ruin saves MekHQ also wouldn't know how to repair them). They are on the to-do list, so hopefully within a few releases.

i did not even realize I had that in there  must of pulled it from one of my saved files from MegMek  lol  hopefully this will fix my frustrations  lol

MekHQ can't find the file in your data/mechfiles for one of your units, in your case it looks like the first one. The most common cause of this is forgetting to copy over custom units. Do you have custom units in your campaign? Another possibility is that the chassis/model name may have changed in the database. Open up your campaign file in a text editor and look for the first unit entry.  Or upload it here and I can look.

I don't know how I didn't understand that the first time.

Fixed. Thanks for repeating it with different words so it could sink in.

(I changed the names of the Clan 'mechs to have the Clan name first in all cases.)

Actually clan names should be second now. For example:
Dragonfly (Viper)
Dragonfly is the Inner Sphere name for it, Viper is the clan name.
Or...
Daishi (Dire Wolf)
Again, Daishi (From the Draconis Combine - Japanese for "Great Death") is the IS name, and Dire Wolf is the Clan name.
